Toyota GR Yaris Project Car Has Arrived 5 Feb 2021
The plan in 2020 was to introduce a project car to the channel in 2021 but I didn’t know what that car was ultimately going to be until finally getting my hands on the new Toyota GR Yaris. The hype, as they say, is real! This little pocket rocket of a car is the epitome of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the performance Toyota and Gazoo Racing have managed to squeeze out of this platform is astounding, if you weren’t aware that under the bonnet was a 1.6l 3-cylinder engine you’d simply never believe it by the way it drives.
The power band is thick with torque and as the car weighs just 1280kg together with 257hp the little GR Yaris has genuinely surprising performance and a rally developed chassis and suspension that picks apart a wet country road like you quite simply wouldn’t believe.
Few cars had so much hype in 2020 and rightly so, Toyota have developed a truly brilliant homologation special with the GR Yaris, however…
It’s not all brilliant and this is exactly the reason why it jumped out to me as the perfect ‘project car’ for this year. As opposed to modifying the car just for the fun of it there are a few legitimate tweaks that can be made to the Yaris that I truly believe will enhance the experience of this already brilliant car.
